What Are You Serving for Thanksgiving?
Tradition. That’s the one thing we can always count on during Thanksgiving Dinner. We make the same foods. We compare each year’s turkey to the one that came before. New family members step in and take over the entertaining duties. For several years my husband and I combined our two families, squished them into our kitchen, and we entertained. People brought foods - green bean casserole, mashed squash - I cooked the turkey and I recall it always being tender and moist. At least that was the goal. Tradition in the making.
But this year I’ve decided to do something different. We’ve moved, and my mom is hosting Thanksgiving for her family. My husband and I have decided to shake things up a bit with our meal.
The menu will take elements from the various places we’ve visited and lived. My husband charged me with the task of roasting a duck and making it “just as tasty as the ones we’ve had in Germany”.
I am also serving potato pancakes instead of mashed potatoes, chestnut soup instead of a squash dish (my Mediterranean meal element) and a salad which I will likely assemble put goat cheese, pomegranate seeds, walnuts, arugula, and dried cranberries.
The one traditional item that remains is apple pie. I guess that’s the one thing neither of us could do without.
